How You Do Anything Is How You Do Everything

How you do anything

“How you do anything is how you do everything,” said my very first personal life coach. She asked me what in my life was out of sync, what in my physical space was out of place. Having a personal life coach was an amazing journey for me, as I had decided to go into a life coaching career myself. So I was totally taken by her question—“What are you doing in your physical life that is out of place?” It was so down to earth!

“How you do anything …” What I couldn’t get under control at that time was my dining room table. I had the luxury of a dining room, but my dining room table, which opened into a square for twelve people, had become a catch-all for whatever I was working on. My dining room was no longer a dining room. It had become a repository for all my unfinished business. It drove me crazy—and I hated it.

The mess, the unusable dining room, the unfinished business. I was baffled by her question, “What are you doing in your physical life that is out of place?” Darn it, I thought life coaching was more spiritual than that. Is this why I have a personal life coach, to tidy up my dining room table? “How you do anything …”

how you do everything

“How you do anything is how you do everything,” said my personal life coach, revealing her master plan. Under that innocent, practical statement lay a big learning lesson. I learned that who you are in your practical life is who you are in all realms of your life. Everything you do affects who you are.

“Is how you do everything …” Because I am a keen person, always striving for perfection, I was holding on to files and projects, wanting to improve them, wanting to make sure they were the best. I learned from my personal life coach that nothing beats the commitment to finalizing a project. I learned that I am best when I trust my work and complete it officially. No second guessing, no holding on, just confidence in my work and myself.

“How you do anything is how you do everything” is the lesson I learned from my dining room table. The table is clear now—it has been clear ever since. I have committed fully to my work and myself. No lingering files, no unfinished business—I trust myself. I work with my clients as a personal life coach (and a business coach and brand consultant), making sure everyone embraces that what you are doing is who you are as a person.

What is out of place in your physical life? Remember, how you do anything is how you do everything.
